YOU CAN WANT MONEY

The other day I messaged with a woman who told me how she’s using her blue flame. Her father was recently diagnosed with a degenerative illness, and she’s in the overwhelming process of moving him across states and into her area. Her son was diagnosed with special needs right before they got the news about her dad. She messaged me to say she’s been carving out time to create a picture wall in her living room. She found a tutorial on taking thrift-store frames and spray-painting them in matching colors for a cool designer effect.

“This is blue-flame work for me. It makes me happy each time I add another frame to the wall. My family likes seeing which photos I pick. They’re loving the new look of the living room.” She added, “With everything I have going on right now, it’s important to me to have work that I can escape into sometimes.”

She’s able to do only one or two new frames a week, and that’s the right tempo for her right now. She has no interest in selling her work or running a frame-making empire. She mentioned that she could see this turning into a career in interior design one day, but for now she’s enjoying doing it just for fun.

This approach works perfectly for her. For other people, one of the first things they think about is how they can monetize their blue flame. Maybe they’re desperate for extra cash or they just like the idea of starting a business. Either way, I always encourage them to do it. Between the writing and speaking I’ve done on this subject, and Joe’s work helping small businesses in his law practice, I’ve now heard hundreds of stories of people who took their blue flame and turned it into a source of income. What I have learned is this:

It is possible.

You can do it.

People often hedge their bets by saying, “I’m just giving this a shot. It’s really more of a hobby than anything.” Meanwhile, I’m silently counting the days until they announce that their spouse has quit his or her job to work with them on their blue flame full time, which usually comes a few years later. I see that story more often than I see stories of it not working. It’s unusual (though possible) to make millions and millions of dollars, but it’s quite common to make enough money to pay your bills.

Here are the keys to making it work:

Dream Big, Start Small

First, be honest with yourself about what your ambitions are. If you secretly think you’re meant to turn your blue flame into a large business with an international presence, own that. Again, this isn’t about you. If your destiny is to start something big, you don’t have the right to false-humility your way out of that. I once heard Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino’s Pizza, give a talk to a small group of business leaders. He told them they shouldn’t apologize for wanting to grow their companies.
